The Mission Bay Preservationists go to Japan!

We are fundraising to give some of Southern California's most talented young musicians the opportunity to travel and perform in JAPAN. This adventure started in 2017 when the Preservationists were selected to perform and represent San Diego in its sister city Yokohama, Japan to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of sister city relations. We will be returning in April of 2023 to collaborate with local musicians, perform for community events and enhance the bonds between our two cities.

We need to raise $30,000 to make this dream a reality.  The San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society has offered to help raise half of the needed funds!!!  We are hopeful community and business members will step up to help fund this amazing experience.

Mission Bay High School is a Title 1 school with a very culturally diverse population. This is definitely something that is very unique to our school and city.  These students have limited resources.  The music program strives to enrich their lives and give them experiences that will foster a sense of purpose and pride in their heritage. We are a melting pot of cultures and music.  To have all these students from various backgrounds come together and form a cohesive group focused on traditional jazz is a true accomplishment. This learning experience would give students the opportunity of a lifetime!

All funds raised will go towards:

  • Travel expenses (plane tickets from San Diego to Japan),

  • hotel costs (8 days and 7 nights)

  • instrument rentals

  • transportation in Japan for performances

The Mission Bay Preservationists have been selected to perform and represent San Diego in its sister city Yokohama, Japan in April of 2023 to commemorate the 65th anniversary of sister city relations!

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to send our top performance group, the Preservationists, to Japan for a one-in-a-lifetime experience.  The San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society has offered to help raise half of the needed funds.  We are hopeful community and business members will step up to help fund this amazing experience.

Mission Bay High School played a central role in welcoming twenty students from its twinned partner school Kanazawa High School in March 2016. Our ASB organized on-campus tours and a San Diego tour itinerary for the young visitors, who initiated a Japanese garden project at a nearby elementary school, Crown Point Junior Music Academy.

Yokohama has a long history of being a hub for western cultural influence in Japan, introducing Jazz throughout the 1920s and flourishing in the postwar period of American military presence in the region. These young musicians will bring their enthusiasm and music to present the finest talent and resonate with a cherished musical heritage in Yokohama.

This is a unique tribute San Diego can offer to its sister city and promote goodwill between private citizens. This experience will also cultivate the cultural depth and professional horizons of our very capable young women and men as they prepare for the next chapter in their adult lives.

Today’s Preservationists continue a tradition of more than 30 years at Mission Bay High School, a magnet high school in Pacific Beach. Jean-Paul Balmat, the current music director, is the second former Mission Bay High music student to return as to his alma mater and teach.

“Our program is nationally known, which sets a very high standard for our students,” said Balmat. “This is the kind of program that motivates kids to work hard in school, to graduate and continue their education.”

Music is a major draw to the school, which uses International Baccalaureate academic standards. Mission Bay High draws many of its students from communities outside of the beach areas, with some students spending more than an hour each day on bus rides to school.

The Preservationists are known as one of the nation’s finest traditional youth jazz bands. Some of their major performances include: Preservation Hall, WWOZ Radio and the Old US Mint Performance Hall (New Orleans), the Sacramento Music Festival, San Diego Jazz Festival, TEDx San Diego, House of Blues, Jazz Education Network Conference, KUSI News, Fox 5 News, and KSDS Jazz 88.3-FM (San Diego).

The program is sponsored by the Mission Bay Band Boosters, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that supports the Mission Bay High music programs.
